Designers Squid.inc adding final touches to Newcastle’s first five star hotel

Having been wowed by the interiors of Hotel Gotham Manchester we’re eagerly looking forward to the grand unveiling of Hotel Gotham Newcastle, and have just received these images as a small teaser for things to come.

Leading interior design firm, Squid.inc, which has previously worked on the likes of Hotel Brooklyn Manchester, The Telegraph Hotel in Coventry and Hotel Gotham Manchester, has been tasked with breathing new life into Newcastle’s historic 1920s Grade II-listed former Fire and Police Station.

As one of the most talked-about developments in the city, Oliver Redfern, Project Lead at Squid.inc shared the vision behind this landmark project.

The project officially kicked off in late 2021, but Squid.inc had its eye on this property when it was proposed in 2020.

Oliver said: “The building’s history and character immediately resonated with us.

“We believe every property has its own essential story, and this one is rich with history that we were eager to preserve while infusing it with the glamorous, Art Deco spirit of Gotham.”

The hotel will open in two phases, with the Fire Station side debuting in Spring 2025, offering 60 meticulously designed bedrooms, a restaurant and a private member’s bar.

The Police Station side, launching in Autumn 2025, will introduce an additional 30 rooms, including the famous Gotham Sanctum Suites.

Both buildings will retain their unique character, while a modern glazed corridor will seamlessly link the spaces, providing continuity for guests as they explore the hotel’s grand interiors.

Oliver admits that some sacrifices have had to be made along the way: “We loved the old roller shutter doors in the engine room, but due to modern acoustic requirements and the need for mechanical services, we had to adapt and move forward.

“The space had a very utilitarian feel and was never meant to be anything other than practical.

“ However, we felt it was important to retain at some level this quality, whilst ensuring the finished interior would feel welcoming to a new clientele when it becomes the hotel’s main bar.”

Squid.inc credits professional firms FYR Projects, Ryder, and CAPS Group as being crucial to bringing their vision to life, and together they see Hotel Gotham Newcastle as more than just a hotel but as a statement for the city.

Oliver said: “The scale of the investment into Newcastle city centre and the football club is hard evidence of the enduring popularity of the destination.

“It’s time that the city had a five-star hotel to be truly proud of, which delivers a high level of service, and sophistication all with a cheeky smile.”
