Pub and Bar Management Jobs
What makes a bar or a pub stand out from the rest? Is it the design? Or is it the range of drinks available? The location? Maybe it’s something to do with the theme. Whilst all these things have relevance to a venue’s success, there is one thing above all that every good bar has in common. And that is good staff.
Good staff are essential to the success of any hospitality business and front of house bar staff are always in the firing line. As any guest will tell you, no matter how beautiful the interior or reasonable the price, if the staff are rude, arrogant or aloof, then the first visit is likely to be the last.
So, what makes a member of staff good? Well, first and foremost they must be naturally sociable. They must be people who like people. Second, they must be personable. This is about their individuality, their demeaner and their presentation. As much as they must like people, it’s equally important that people like them. Thirdly, they must have the right attitude to work. Working in hospitality is not like any other job, it needs to be embraced with a passion. Good staff should have a genuine willingness to please.
These are the qualities that employers should look for during the interview stage. If candidates aren’t naturally sociable and personable, or have a rigid attitude, then they’re not right for the job.
Pretty much everything else required to make a valued member of staff can be trained.
Great Staff are the cornerstone of a good bar but to get the most from those individuals and to mould them into a tight, well organised team, it takes a good Bar Manager.
An experienced Bar Manager with a proven track record is absolutely crucial to the success of any bar, and at any stage. Whether it’s a new bar waiting to open or an established bar looking to retain its reputation. It usually follows that the better the Bar Manager, the better the staff, the better the bar.
The best advice to any pub or bar owner, is find the very best Bar Manager that you can. Everything else should then fall neatly into place.
