Studio Moren, hospitality architecture & interior design specialist, drew on its heritage in the hotel sector when developing the operational concept for the art’otel London Battersea Power Station, creating a property to continue the legacy of its industrial neighbour.
The team is honoured that the hotel has been shortlisted in the newbuild category for the prestigious AHEAD Europe awards for hospitality experience and design.
The 164-room art’otel at Battersea was the first hotel under the PPHE-owned brand to be completed in the UK, showcasing the flag as it expands in Europe with a collection of lifestyle hotels, each inspired by a signature artist.

Studio Moren was appointed hotel architect from RIBA Stage 2 to completion, working over seven years to apply the practice’s hotel space-planning and production expertise in a shell and core framework to maximise the hotel’s available area and develop the concept to construction.
The totemic landmark gave the design team a rich depth of inspiration when telling the building’s story.

As executive interior architects, Studio Moren’s creative experience evolved throughout the process of interpreting the interior design concepts while working in concert with the new building’s unique fabric and location to develop the design in tune with the hotel’s operational requirements.
This included rationalising circulation and room types and introducing a specific hotel servicing/escape stair.
Studio Moren responded to the challenge of unifying multiple globally-respected teams under tight time constraints, to deliver the design intent while satisfying the operator’s requirements.
Working closely with the wider design team, the practice successfully delivered two very different, yet complementary, interior design schemes.
Award-winning Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon was appointed to ignite the property’s energy, with public spaces and guestrooms taking on his interior design concept and signature artworks; a new wave that blurs the lines between art, decoration and design within the context of contemporary design culture.

The top floor signature bar and restaurant interior design by Russell Sage Studio, followed a contemporary interpretation of Art Deco design aesthetics as it offered close and intimate views of the Power Station’s iconic chimneys.

The hotel and overall Battersea development was designed to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ status, with sustainability a key driver in the design and delivery of the hotel, from innovative heating solutions, to high-tech hotel management solutions that aim to improve both guest experience and hotel management, as well as a green roof.
The hotel rooftop is publicly accessible and features a stunning Roof Garden designed by the team behind the New York High Line, James Corner Field Operations.

The hotel is a key component of Phase 3 of the Battersea development, overseen by the Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) and designed by Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners.
Studio Moren is proud to have played a role in this new chapter of the capital’s history, regenerating the area and creating a new destination for residents and visitors alike.
