The Spa at South Lodge
Sparcstudio have completed work at The Spa at South Lodge, an Exclusive Hotel.
The spa, set in the rolling hills of the South Downs in Sussex, occupies a stand-alone building designed to embrace the natural setting. Set into the natural contours of the land, The Spa complements the landscape with a grass and sedum roof and green oak cladding. Designed with sustainability in mind, bringing the outside in and extending the spa out into the grounds.
Danny Pecorelli, Managing Director of Exclusive Hotels & Venues, appointed Sparcstudio as the Interior Architects/Spa Designers responsible for the overall spa concept from space planning and the spa journey to the contemporary lighting design, thermal suite cabins, the interior finishes and the contemporary bespoke furniture design.
Pecorelli says: “I chose Sparcstudio to work with because I liked their design. We have worked together on other smaller projects, we did some upgrades at Pennyhill Park and the Manor House Castle Coombe.
“It boils down to a comfort in their understanding of the brief and their knowledge of the project. Exclusive Hotels are all about the attention to detail and so are Sparcstudio.”
Much of the design concept was inspired by South Lodge’s botanical history dating back to the 1800’s.
Frederick DuCane Godman, a British naturalist and plant collector built the original house and surrounding gardens with over 360 species of trees and plants sourced from the Azores, the Caribbean and Central & South America.
The spa has 14 nature themed treatment rooms, each bearing a name and design inspiration from the gardens including rose, camellia, juniper and rosemary.
The pre and post treatment Lounge is defined by two distinct zones, a deep relaxation space with ‘Four Senses’ experiential beds and a lighter relaxation area with floor to ceiling slot windows overlooking the spa gardens.
Sparcstudio has created stylish dressing rooms with marble and etched glass showers and relaxing social spaces with comfy sofas, tiled rugs and bookcases.
All bespoke designed to create a ‘club-like’ feel.
The Thermal Suite with a candlelit relaxation zone overlooks the outdoor terrace hydro-pool and features a series of bespoke experiences including the panoramic juniper-infused sauna, featuring wall to ceiling organic profiled timber fins and full height glazing overlooking the gardens.
The space also includes a marble lined salt steam room, an aromatic herbal bath infused with Camomile and hot experiential showers and cold drench.
Guests can relax on the curved heated seating area with its slatted Iroko hardwood candlelit screen.
The hotel has a newly created outdoor spa garden.
The upper spa terrace boasts relaxation beds and a fire pit with a large infinity edge hydropool overlooking the gardens below.
The lower spa terrace is an extensive decked relaxation area surrounding a reed fringed 18m heated swimming pool.
Guests using this outdoor space make use of a lounge bar area with a champagne pool bar.
