The Sustainability Award goes to...

At the recent Mediterranean Tourism Forum Gala Dinner held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre (13th June 2022); The Xara Palace’s sustainability effort was acknowledged with the Innovation Sustainability Award.

This award celebrates The Xara Palace’s passion for sustainability and is perfectly timed with the opening of The Xara Gardens and their new Aquaponics system.

The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux, a unique 17th-century palace hidden away in the medieval fortified city of Medina, the old capital of Malta is working hard to become more sustainable.

Its new aquaponics system sees 40% of the hotel’s on-site kitchen waste fed to insects, which are then fed to fish.

The nutrient rich fish waste is then used in a hydroponic system, which uses no soil, with the waste acting as the fertiliser for plants to grow top-quality ingredients, which are then used in The Xara Palace’s Michelin star restaurant, de Mondion.

This system helps to keep greenhouse gases in the food-chain and out of the atmosphere and contributes towards the hotel’s farm to fork approach, which reduces the climate impact of food importation.

The Xara Palace also has an organic and regenerative agriculture approach to farming, which means everything taken from the land is given back.

Helping to strengthen the health and vitality of farm soil, which also supports with topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle and increasing resilience to climate change.

Chickens will also be integrated into the gardens and onto the land to further help nourish the soil.

Growing the hotel’s own food also helps reduce the hotel’s reliance on food importation.

Organic soaps will also be used in all cleaning so that the grey water can be recycled and used to water the fields.

This award will drive The Xara Palace even further with their focus on sustainable growth.

Commenting on the award, Justin Zammit Tabona; Director of The Xara Collection, states: “We are all very proud of our continuous efforts to push our gastronomic boundaries through our unique sustainable project at Xara Gardens by making a better world through cuisine and hospitality and continually pushing to put Malta on the international gastronomic map.”
