Ian Schrager’s influence is never far away in EDITION hotels, and The Barcelona EDITION, which opened last autumn, combines design, humour and innovation with personal, friendly service. Trademark Schrager, in fact.
Having undergone a complete metamorphosis by architects Carlos Ferrater Studio, the original corner property has been transformed into a contemporary, glass-fronted monument.
Under the creative direction of Ian Schrager, alongside Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán the hotel brings together the character of a historic environment with a simple, sophisticated design sensibility. In fact, it’s the collaborative designs that help to give each EDITION a degree of individuality and a sense of place.
Guests are greeted by a double-height lobby dominated by a sapphire Eric Schmitt chandelier and a selection of timeless furniture designed by Catalan masters.
A black marble and walnut desk reminiscent of an abstract sculpture piece dominates the reception.
Composed of two spaces, the lounge aims to give the impression of a traditional living room with Christian Liaigre chairs and a games table, as well as a pair of Yves Klein blue armchairs designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld.
The second space has been conceived as an intimate area with low ceilings and sheepskin armchairs. An illuminated blue art piece by Carlos Coronas combines elegantly with dark wood wall finishes and off white fabrics.
Bar Veraz’s guests are captivated by a central piece that occupies the double height space, while the wall of backlit bottles creates a warm crepuscular light. A selection of art pieces by Catalan artists help forge a connection with the city.
An incarnation of The London EDITION’s Punch Room occupies the mezzanine, accessed by a spiral staircase of steel, marble and wood. A Castilian style billiard table with golden cloth welcomes guests into a space enclosed by oak panelled walls which are complimented by a dark oak checkerboard floor.
A black granite fireplace combined with leather and green velvet furniture pieces adds to the warmth of the space, whilst photos by local artist Andrea Torres are framed along the walls, flanked by wall sconces and antique lamps.
Cabaret offers a new kind of dining concept, conceived with late-night revelry in mind. As guests come to the end of their main courses, the velvet curtains at the end of the dining room is drawn back to reveal the stage, dramatically framed by a large archway. Whilst the lounge area, with its low ceiling and black velvet walls glimmer in the low light and set the scene for a more intimate ambience.
The Roof offers an abundantly-planted lounge area. An Iroko wood decking spans across the terrace with lanterns and upholstered furniture in ivory, grey and blue tones. The travertine marble-fronted cocktail bar is surrounded by lounge seating and sunbeds situated around the plunge pool.
The 100 rooms and suites are typically EDITION in style. State-of-the-art beds are adorned with EDITION’s Signature, Anichini linens.
Custom designed furniture, such as the embossed Spanish leather headboards, give a sophisticated touch.
The walls are clad in walnut panelling and floors feature a whitened oak herringbone parquet. Bathrooms are finished in white Sivec marble, detailed with brass hardware, which adds glamour and ‘lifts’ the spaces.
This new lifestyle hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the old city, the district known as El Born, which is close to the waterfront and the sights of the Gothic quarter, such as the Cathedral and the Picasso Museum. In short, The Barcelona EDITION delivers an innovative travel experience in Barcelona, bringing luxury and lifestyle to the city centre.
For those who have stayed in other EDITION hotels, The Barcelona EDITION will feel familiar and different at the same time.
The brand has developed a distinctive style and look, which sets it apart from other modern hotels and gives it a unique character, thus the familiarity.
However, the collaboration with Spanish architects and local designers give it its sense of place and keeps the hotel grounded in its location. This is what sets it apart from its international cousins.
